Membership and Cancellation Policy
-
What you're buying
Current prices are shown on our Plans and Pricing page, and again before you pay. If you joined earlier, your membership continues at the price you are paying now — a price change never reaches an existing member automatically.
Memberships renew automatically until you cancel:
4 Sessions — renews every 4 weeks, 4 sessions per cycle
8 Sessions — renews every 6 weeks, 8 sessions per cycle
12 Sessions — renews every 8 weeks, 12 sessions per cycle
Unlimited — renews monthly, unlimited classes
Unlimited on a committed term — renews monthly for the length of the term you chose
Packs and single classes do not renew:
10-Session Pack — 10 sessions, to be used within 90 days Drop-in — a single class Intro Offer — up to 6 classes in 2 weeks, new clients only, one per person
Classes are kept small — usually no more than ten people. That is the product: it is why your coach knows your name and can fix your form mid-set. Space is limited, which is why the booking rules below matter. Class sizes can vary, and we occasionally run events or one-off sessions at a different size.
2. How billing works
Your card is charged on the day you join, and on the same cycle from then on. Your exact next charge date is always shown in your account and on every receipt.
Sessions from a membership expire at the end of each cycle. They do not roll over.
Prices are inclusive. There are no joining fees, admin fees or annual fees at MATS. What you see is what you pay.
3. Booking, cancelling a class, and no-shows
Booking. Book up to 7 days ahead through your MATS account. A class is yours once it is booked.
Cancelling. Cancel at least 8 hours before the class starts and the session goes straight back to your balance, no questions. Eight hours means you can drop a 6pm class up to 10am the same morning — enough time for someone on the waitlist to plan their evening.
Late cancels and no-shows. Cancel inside 8 hours, or don't show up, and the session is used. On a session membership or pack, that session is deducted. On an Unlimited membership, a $15 late-cancel fee applies, because there is no session to deduct and a booked spot went unused in a class with very few of them.
Your first one is free. Everybody has had the day that falls apart. Your first late cancel or no-show in any rolling 12 months is waived automatically — you do not have to ask.
Waitlists. If a class is full, add yourself to the waitlist. If a spot opens more than 8 hours out, we will book you in and email you. Inside 8 hours we will email you the offer instead, and you can take it or leave it. You are never charged for a waitlist spot you did not accept.
Lateness. Please arrive 5 minutes early. Warm-ups exist to keep you safe, and a coach may ask you to sit out if you have missed one. Arriving more than 10 minutes late may mean you cannot join that class.
4. Freezing your membership
Life happens — travel, work, injury, a bad month.
You can freeze any membership for up to two months per 12-month period, in whole or half-month blocks, minimum two weeks.
Freezing is free. Tell us at least 7 days before your next renewal date so we can stop the charge in time.
Billing pauses; nothing is charged while you are frozen. Any unused sessions in your current cycle are waiting when you come back.
On a 6-month plan, a freeze extends your term by the length of the freeze rather than shortening it.
5. Cancelling your membership
Month-to-month and session memberships. Cancel any time. Give us 7 days' notice before your next renewal date and you will not be charged again. Your current cycle runs to its end — you keep whatever sessions you have paid for until then. Cancel from My Subscriptions in your MATS account, the same way you signed up, or email info@matsboston.com. We will confirm in writing within one business day.
Committed-term plans. These are discounted in exchange for a commitment, so they run for their full term. If you need to leave early, you pay back the discount you have already received — the difference between your committed rate and the standard Unlimited monthly rate, for the months you have used, and nothing more. No exit fee, no penalty, no remaining months to buy out.
The statutory exceptions below override all of the above, for every plan, including committed terms.
YOUR RIGHT TO CANCEL FOR OTHER REASONS
AFTER THE EXPIRATION OF THE THREE-DAY PERIOD FOR CANCELLATION, THIS CONTRACT MAY BE CANCELLED FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING REASONS:
(1) IN THE EVENT OF THE BUYER'S DEATH, THE BUYER'S ESTATE MAY CANCEL;
(2) IN THE EVENT OF THE BUYER'S SIGNIFICANT PHYSICAL OR MEDICAL DISABILITY FOR A PERIOD IN EXCESS OF THREE MONTHS, THE BUYER MAY CANCEL;
(3) IN THE EVENT THAT THE SELLER FAILS TO OPEN A PLANNED FACILITY, PERMANENTLY CLOSES A FACILITY, OR SUBSTANTIALLY CHANGES ITS OPERATIONS, THE BUYER MAY CANCEL;
(4) IN THE EVENT THAT THE BUYER MOVES HIS OR HER RESIDENCE MORE THAN TWENTY-FIVE (25) MILES FROM A HEALTH CLUB OPERATED BY THE SELLER, THE BUYER MAY CANCEL.
IN ANY OF THESE CASES, ANY REFUND DUE WILL BE PAID WITHIN FIFTEEN (15) DAYS OF OUR RECEIPT OF YOUR NOTICE.
6. Refunds
Within your first three business days: full refund, no questions.
Statutory cancellation — death, disability over three months, relocation over 25 miles, or closure on our end: refund of the unused portion within 15 days.
Packs are refundable pro-rata within 14 days of purchase if unused, less the drop-in rate for any classes taken.
Otherwise we do not refund a cycle already billed. But we would much rather freeze your membership than have you leave, and we will always look at a genuine hardship. Ask.
7. Price changes
We will give you at least 30 days' notice by email before any price change. You can cancel before the new rate starts and owe nothing further. If you are on a committed-term plan, your rate is locked for your whole term — a price change cannot reach you mid-term.
8. Packs, sharing and transfers
Memberships, packs and intro offers are personal to you. They cannot be shared, split between two people, gifted or sold on.
Everything you buy has a window to use it in, and unused classes expire at the end of that window. The 10-class pack expires 90 days after purchase. A single class expires 4 weeks after purchase. The intro offer runs for 2 weeks from purchase, is for new clients only, one per person, and gives you up to 6 classes. Sessions on a membership expire at the end of each billing cycle.
If you are close to an expiry and something has got in the way — illness, travel, a bad month — tell us before it lapses and we will do what we reasonably can. We would rather you trained than lost what you paid for.
9. When we cancel a class
We run our schedule year-round, but occasionally we cancel — snow, a coach out sick, a building problem. If we cancel a class you are booked into, the session goes back to your balance immediately and we will email you as early as we can. If we ever have to close for more than 7 consecutive days, we will credit Unlimited members pro-rata for the closure and extend session memberships and packs by the same number of days. Coaches occasionally substitute for one another; the format and the standard stay the same.
10. In the studio
Clean indoor training shoes, please. Nothing worn in from the street.
Wipe down equipment and put it back where it lives.
Phones stay away during class unless a coach has asked you to film your set.
Don't train if you are contagious. Nobody in a small room wants your cold.
Please don't film or photograph other members without asking them first.
MATS group classes are for adults: you must be 18 or older to train in a class. We do train under-18s, but only in private and semi-private sessions, never in group classes, and only with the written consent of a parent or legal guardian who has completed and signed the waiver on the young person's behalf.
We will ask anyone to leave who behaves aggressively, harasses another member or a coach, arrives impaired, or ignores coaching that is there to keep them safe. We will refund the unused portion of their membership and end it.
Assumption of Risk and Release of Liability
Please read this carefully. It affects your legal rights.
-
What we do here
MATS Boston runs coached small-group strength and conditioning classes. Sessions involve free weights, kettlebells, dumbbells, barbells, resistance equipment, boxes, sleds and conditioning machines; high-effort intervals; partner-based formats where you work directly with another member; and hands-on coaching, which may include a coach physically adjusting your position or spotting you.
2. What can go wrong
Physical training carries risks that cannot be eliminated, however carefully a class is run. These include, and are not limited to: muscle strains and tears; sprains; joint, back and spinal injuries; fractures; concussion; cuts and bruises; injury from dropped, falling or failing equipment; collisions with equipment, walls, or other people; slips and falls; overexertion, dehydration and heat illness; dizziness and fainting; rhabdomyolysis; cardiac events including heart attack and stroke; aggravation of an existing injury or condition; permanent disability; and death. Risks may arise from your own actions, from the actions of other participants including anyone you are partnered with, from the condition of the premises or equipment, and from causes nobody could reasonably have foreseen.
3. You're choosing to be here
You take part voluntarily, having read the above. You accept those risks knowingly and freely, including risks that are not specifically listed.
4. You're telling us you're fit to train
By taking part, you confirm you are in good enough health to exercise strenuously, that you are not aware of any medical condition that makes it unsafe, and that you have been cleared by a doctor if there was any doubt. You agree to tell your coach about injuries, conditions, pregnancy, surgeries or medications that affect how you should train, and to update them when things change. MATS does not provide medical advice; nothing a coach says is a substitute for a doctor.
5. Release
In exchange for being allowed to take part, you release and agree not to sue MATS Boston LLC, its owners, managers, employees, coaches, independent contractors, agents and volunteers, and the owners and lessors of the premises at 1065 Commonwealth Avenue (together, the Released Parties) from any and all claims, demands, actions, damages and costs for injury, illness, death or damage to property arising out of or connected with your participation in MATS classes, personal training, semi-private sessions, events, or your presence at the studio.
This release covers claims arising from the ordinary negligence of the Released Parties.
6. What this release does not cover
It does not release the Released Parties from gross negligence, recklessness, wanton or willful conduct, or intentional misconduct, and it does not release anything the law does not permit to be released. It also does not waive any claim or defense you have under your membership agreement or under Massachusetts General Laws chapter 93, sections 78 through 88. Nothing here limits your cancellation and refund rights set out above.
7. Indemnity
You agree to hold the Released Parties harmless from claims brought by anyone else arising out of your own negligent or intentional acts at the studio — for example, if you injure another member or damage the premises.
8. Emergency care
If you are injured or become ill at the studio and cannot consent for yourself, you authorize MATS staff to arrange emergency medical care, including calling an ambulance. You are responsible for the cost of that care. MATS keeps an AED on the premises and staff trained to use it.
9. Your belongings
Bring what you need and take it home. MATS is not responsible for personal property lost, damaged or stolen at the studio, including from cubbies, hooks and the bathroom.
10. If part of this is unenforceable
If a court finds any part of this release invalid, the rest stays in force. This agreement is governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts of Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
11. If the participant is under 18
MATS group classes are for adults only. We train under-18s in private and semi-private sessions only.
Where the participant is under 18, this agreement must be read, completed and signed by a parent or legal guardian. By signing, that parent or guardian confirms they have the legal authority to do so; accepts, on their own behalf and on behalf of the young person, the risks described above; agrees to the release in section 5 and the indemnity in section 7 on the same terms; and authorizes MATS to arrange emergency medical care under section 8. A parent or guardian must tell us about any condition, injury, medication or history that affects how the young person should train, and must update us when anything changes.
12. Acknowledgment
You have read this in full. You understand it is a release of liability and a binding contract, not a formality. You are agreeing to it freely, and you understand that by doing so you are giving up valuable legal rights, including the right to sue for injuries caused by ordinary negligence.
